Honoring the Legacy of Gilles Villeneuve with Melanie Villeneuve

Honoring the Legacy of Gilles Villeneuve with Melanie Villeneuve

Few names in Formula One history resonate as strongly in Canada as Gilles Villeneuve. The late legendary Ferrari driver became a national hero for his fearless driving style and passion for racing.

Born in the small town in Quebec, Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Villeneuve’s racing journey began far from the glamour of Formula One. Before becoming a Canadian F1 legend, he honed his skills racing snowmobiles across Quebec, developing the fearless instincts that would later define his driving on the world stage.

Today, his legacy continues through fans, motorsport history, and through the work of his daughter, Melanie Villeneuve, who is helping keep his story alive for new generations.

During the AutoShow in Toronto, I spoke with Melanie about a special collection honoring her father and about the future of women in Motorsport.

Gilles Villeneuve’s Legacy Continues

SoViolette:
You’re here today with a special collection. Can you tell us about it?

Melanie Villeneuve:
It’s a collection we designed in honor of my father, Gilles. The idea was to create something that fans of Formula One could connect with both younger fans who may be discovering him for the first time and older fans who remember watching him race.

We started this initiative last year, and right now we’re a bit on a road show. We were in Montreal two weeks ago, then Toronto, and in two weeks we’ll be in Quebec City.

The goal is really to reconnect with people and make sure that Gilles continues to live on through the fans.

SoViolette:
What has been your favorite part of launching a collection that pays tribute to your father?

Melanie Villeneuve:
So many things :The first is that I had the opportunity to really dive into the history. I immersed myself in Gilles’ story, in Formula One history, and in the archives. I learned so much, and I find it fascinating.

So there’s a very personal side where I was able to reconnect with Gilles : but also with my father.

The second part is the love from people : their surprise, enthusiasm, and pride when they reconnect with Gilles and see him honored this way. People really love it.

I think we touched something meaningful that resonates with a lot of people, and that’s wonderful.

The Future of Women in Motorsports

SoViolette:
What do you see for the future of women who want to enter Formula One or other types of motorsport?

Melanie Villeneuve:
For women, I think it’s a long-term journey. It’s important to take the necessary steps to build a movement from the grassroots level.

There are already some initiatives doing a great job. For example, the F1 Academy gives opportunities to women.

But that opportunity exists at a very high level. What I would really like to see is more investment at the levels below, so the entire structure of motorsport can support a much larger movement of women entering the sport.

A Fun Story About Gilles Villeneuve, the Canadian F1 Legend

Off camera, Melanie also shared a small story about her father that revealed a lighter side of the legendary racer.

Despite being one of the most fearless drivers in Formula One history, Gilles Villeneuve had simple tastes. One of his favorite meal was surprisingly humble: bacon, eggs and Coca-Cola, and that even moving to Europe as a family, Melanie recalls with a smile “He would order a “Coke” at the restaurant, but they were very puzzled because those beverages were a rarity in Europe at the time.

Moments like these remind us that behind the myth of the Canadian F1 legend was a man who remained grounded even as he raced at the highest level of motorsport.

Continuing the Legacy for Future Generations

Today, that legacy is still evolving. Melanie Villeneuve shared that the family is currently working on a new film project about their father, which will explore his life, career, and the impact he had on Formula One history and on Canadian motorsport.
